Let’s pretend we are in 2005. The Movies is an amazing game. I would recommend this to anyone who loves simulation games, or even if you just love to have fun. Whatever the case, you gotta play this game.
The movie making features lets you be extremely creative, although a little limited, it still lets you make a fairly good movie. In the game you start out in 1925 at the start of the movie era with limited resources and fairly boring movies being made. For me the game doesn’t start getting fun until you get the custom script office. This is what allows you to make your very own movies all from the creativity of you. This game shows you that making a movie is not as simple as you may think. You need to have a crew, many sets, costumes, trained actors and directors, and much more. Your actors and directors have simple needs that you need to fill, and if a need gets in the red, you may just have to send them to rehab. On your lot you get to place sets and buildings to help you make your movies. Dragging and dropping stars to where you want to put them, for example if you wanted one star to socialize with another you would have to drag and drop them next to each other.
There is also a sandbox mode where you can make movies all you want without having to worry about going through everything. You can start at a later year, choose to have a premade lot if you wish, have instant movie making and instant buildings. If you want to play sandbox before your play the main game it will only let you start at 1955 at the latest, so to be able to start later you have to be further through the main game.
Furthermore, there is also a great tutorial that tells you everything that you need to know. Annoyingly you cannot skip it the first time you play so if you get a new computer or lose your save somehow you will just have to go through the tutorial again.
This is a great looking game with wonderful graphics . The characters aren’t blocky (though the duck costume does look a bit stretched out), and the grass doesn’t look like someone just splattered some green randomly, it all just looks great to me the animators were clearly very experienced.
The music in this game is great. It is perfect for the game and makes this one of those games that you can’t mute and watch TV in the background to (unless you’ve been hearing it for hundreds of hours then you will probably want to mute it). The radio announcer is so funny, the first time I played through the game I laughed almost every time he came on. My only main complaint on the sound is when making a movie, unless you are planning to record your own voice all the stars say are “Well anyway dabadabadadaba.” and some of them just make some weird robot sounds. It gets annoying after a while.
This is definitely a game that you will want to spend 100+ hours on and will remember for a long time.
